Chinese 1 is building basic communication skills in spoken and written Mandarin Chinese for the student’s world. Thematically, we will touch on the following topics:

1. Greeting: Hello, My Chinese Name is…, Counting and Dates

2. My Family: Family, Birthday Parties, American vs. Chinese Families

3. My Friends: My Friends at School, My Friends in Foreign Countries, Making Friends

4. At School: My Classroom and School, My Schedule, Hosting an Exchange Student

5. Leisure Time: sports, Leisure time, Plans for the Weekend

The students will also be introduced to the fundamentals of writing Chinese characters, and the four tones of Mandarin.

All contents of the level 1 Chinese class are taught on the background of important cultural events in the course of the school year, and in reference to cultural objects of great relevance for our topics.
